HOLMEN — The Holmen High School boys basketball team took over sole possession of the MVC with another good shooting night during an 87-68 victory over Sparta at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse on Tuesday.
The Vikings (9-2, 3-0) lead the conference by a half-game over Onalaska (3-1) and a full game over Aquinas (2-1) and Central (2-1) after the Hilltoppers knocked off the Blugolds on Tuesday.
Holmen, which ran its winning streak to five games, did its damage against the Spartans by making 11 of 21 attempts from the 3-point line and all 14 of its free throws.
Senior Keenan Eisermann made 7 of 10 shots overall and all seven of his free throws to lead the Vikings with 22 points. He also led the team with six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Senior Tristan Hanson made 5 of 7 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. He was also 4 for 5 from the 3-point line in Monday’s victory over New Richmond and has 27 points this week.
Junior Alex Berget scored 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting on a night where Holmen made 55 percent of its field goals (31 of 56). He also had three steals. Senior Kaiden Wilber added 14 points as Holmen outscored Sparta by 18 points in the second half after getting to halftime with a 44-43 advantage.
Central 84, Logan 47
LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (6-3, 2-1) had a 19-point lead by the end of the first half at the Steve Hole Field House and had four players score at least 13 points.
Senior Jaylon Calvert finished with a team-high 19 on 9-for-13 shooting. He made his only 3-point attempt and pulled down five rebounds. Senior Frankie Wilk added 16 points by making all eight of his free throws and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Derrick Pangier added 14 points and Gabe Servais 13 as the RiverHawks beat the Rangers (4-7, 0-3) for the 21st time in a row.
Logan was led by freshman Tommy Check’s 18 points and three assists. Check made 4 of 8 attempts from the 3-point line and was 7 for 11 overall from the floor. Senior Bradley Check added 10 points and sophomore Bubba Leaver eight to go with a team-high six rebounds.
West Salem 91, Westby 53
WEST SALEM — The first-place Panthers (9-3, 6-0) won their third game in a row and had nine players score as they romped past the Norsemen (4-8, 1-3).
West Salem, a dangerous team from the perimeter, made just five 3-pointers and had six players score at least nine points.
Senior Carter Pontius had 10 of his 19 in the first half as the Panthers pulled away with pressure defense and forced turnovers. West Salem also beat the Norsemen badly on the boards and converted on plenty of putbacks.
Senior Kyle Hehli had 11 of his 18 in the first half and junior Tyson Labus 11 of his 13 before halftime. Junior Nathan Dillaber and sophomore Drew McConkey scored nine points apiece for the Panthers.
Black River Falls 74, Luther 65
BLACK RIVER FALLS — Tigers coach Jack Taylor picked up the first win of his career after his team led the Knights by as many as 23 points.
Luther (7-4, 3-2) had its losing streak pushed to four games after opening the season with seven straight wins and couldn’t get out of an 18-point hole after one half. The Knights had 16 turnovers and were led by senior Will Huelskamp’s 17 points and six rebounds.
Luther finished with seven 3-pointers, and senior Synclair Byus made two of those on his way to 13 points before fouling out of the game.
Senior Jackson Kendall added 10 points for Luther, which received the same from junior Brody Greeno.
G-E-T 58, Arcadia 45
GALESVILLE — The Red Hawks (6-7, 3-2) won their second game in a row and held the Raiders (5-7, 2-3) to 19 points in the first half.
Senior Nolan Smith scored a team0high 17 points for Arcadia, which also received nine apiece from Carter Wegman and Deklyn Grzadzielewski. The Raiders have been held to less than 50 points in two straight games and will try to get back on track against C-FC on Thursday.
G-E-T junior Mason Brone scored a game-high 25 points.
