LA CROSSE — The Onalaska High School ASL floor hockey team started its season with a 9-6 victory over Central on Tuesday.

The Hilltoppers received five goals from Connor Wirth and four from Paul Yang for a victory in a game that was tied at 2 after one period and at 3 after a second period.

Onalaska also scored the final four goals after the RiverHawks took a 6-5 lead after the second five minutes of the third period.

Central was led by Joe Mayer, who scored all six of his team’s goals, and Josh Hass, who made 29 saves during his first game in goal. Colin McCaffrey played in goal for the Hilltoppers, and coach Robby Carson said he did a great job.

“Joe Mayer was relentless on both end of the floor,” Central coach Stephanie Mick said. “He gave it everything he had right up to the end.

“Joe is a fantastic leader for the team and always leads by example while still encouraging his teammates
“He stays positive and understands the strategies of the game. He earns every point he scores and always comes up big for us when we need him on defense.”

Ella Daniel and Rhett Brockmiller — newcomers to the sport — each had two assists for the RiverHawks.

“They did a great job centering the puck and fighting for it in the corners,” Mick said.

Logan at West Salem

WEST SALEM — Logan was limited in available players, so this game was turned into a scrimmage.

West Salem coach Ashly Serres said her team did a great job of passing, working together and hustling all night. The scrimmage also gave her players a chance to get a better feel for the games that are upcoming.

Val Herrewig and Levi Wulf both played in goal for the Panthers, who will play two games next week.

The Rangers scored five goals in the scrimmage, and Simon Mell had three of them. Benji Wood scored the other two.

Mell, Alex Cruz-Bautista, Wood, Harley Mowery and Danika Rusch each had an assist for Logan.
