VIROQUA — The Viroqua co-op boys hockey team started its season with a 5-3 victory over South Central at the Viroqua Community Arena on Tuesday.

The Blackhawks (1-0) scored four goals in the first period and added another one in the third in a game where seniors Connor Williams and Jack Dahl and junior Collin Simonson all had one goal and one assist.

Carter Holmes scored Viroqua’s first goal, and Ryder Steele and Dahl assisted on it. Williams then assisted Brooks Hoffland on a goal and scored on a Steele assist to give his team a 3-0 lead at the 6-minute, 51-second mark of the first. Dahl made it 4-0 with help from Simonson.

Simonson then scored early in the third to give the Blackhawks a 5-1 advantage.

Winona 5, La Crescent-Hokah 1

WINONA — The Lancers (1-1) allowed the Winhawks to score the first two goals and only had 13 shots over the first two periods.

Freshman Archer Semling ended the shutout with a goal set up by a pass from junior Cooper Hill at 13:52 of the first, but La Crescent-Hokah couldn’t find the back of the net again.

Kaden Grass had two goals and one assist for Winona.

WEST SALEM — The Cyclones (0-1-1) were tipped by the Lightning at the Panther Den.

Junior Brooke Borkenhagen scored an unassisted short-handed goal at the 6:47 mark of the first period to tie the game, and the team battled scoreless the rest of the way through regulation.

Forward Reese Olson broke that tie at the 2:07 mark of overtime. Diana Hanson made 17 saves in goal for Coulee Region.
