DEFOREST — The Holmen High School volleyball team is one win away from qualifying for the WIAA Division 1 state tournament after sweeping past seventh-seeded Madison Memorial in a sectional semifinal match Thursday in DeForest.
The sixth-seeded Vikings (22-10) won their seventh straight match and pulled away after a tight first set for a 26-24, 25-13, 25-17 victory over the Spartans. That sets them up for a sectional final against fourth-seeded Verona at Onalaska on Saturday afternoon. The match starts at 4 p.m.
Junior Charley Casey had a team-high 12 kills and added 10 digs for Holmen, which hasn’t lost since Oct. 5. Junior Macy Kline had a team-high 13 digs, and junior Sadie Meyer led the Vikings with 14 assists.
Junior Brenna Schmidt and sophomore Moira Linse had seven kills apiece as Holmen advanced to the sectional finals for the second straight season. Linse also had two blocks and Casey two blocks and two aces.

MATSHFIELD — The Blugolds (15-2-4) qualified for a sectional final be defeating the last team that had beaten them/
Junior Caden Schams and Harry Griffith scored first-half goals that held up for second-seeded Aquinas, which lost a 1-0 game to the top-seeded Dons on Sept. 7 and haven’t been defeated since.
Senior Jackson Knothe posted the shutout in goal for the Blugolds, who play Northland Pines (14-2-3), which beat Cumberland 5-1 in its semifinal on Thursday. The championship match will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday in Marshfield.
