VERONA — Defending WIAA Division 1 state champion Madison Edgewood started its boys hockey postseason by ending the season for the Avalanche on Thursday.
The top-seeded Crusaders scored three times in the first period and three more times in the second on the way to a 7-0 victory over the Holmen/Aquinas co-op program at the Verona Ice Arena.
The ninth-seeded Avalanche (13-12) were outshot 55-26, and goaltender Dane Adams finished with 48 saves.
Edgewood advances to a sectional semifinal against either fifth-seeded Onalaska/La Crosse of fourth-seeded Verona. The Hilltoppers and Wildcats play on Friday night.
River Falls 9, West Salem/Bangor 1
RIVER FALLS — The seventh-seeded Panthers (2-17-1) had their season ended in a Division 2 regional by the second-seeded Wildcats at the Wildcat Center.
GIRLS
Eau Claire 7, Coulee Region 1
EAU CLAIRE — The second-seeded Stars scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the seventh-seeded Cyclones (4-18-2).
Coulee Region was outshot 43-17 and avoided the shutout when Holmen senior Samara Collins scored unassisted 1 minute into the third period.
