Tuesday volleyball report: Holmen makes Aquinas 11th straight MVC victim in straight sets

LA CROSSE — The sixth-ranked Holmen High School volleyball team swept past Aquinas on the Reinhart Athletic Complex on Tuesday to remain unbeaten in the MVC.

The first-place Vikings who are sixth in the Division 1 state poll released by the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association this week, beat the Blugolds 25-14, 25-24, 25-23 to complete a series sweep this season.

Holmen (21-0 overall, 8-0 MVC) extended their conference win streak to 11 matches behind 10 kills from junior Moira Linse and five aces each from seniors Macy Kline and Sadie Mayer.

Senior Charley Casey had a team-high 14 digs and added eight kills, and Kline added 11 digs. Senior Makenna McHugh had 15 assists, and Mayer contributed 11.

Aquinas (8-12, 4-4) was led by 13 kills, seven digs and a block from senior Sammy Davis and 20 assists, six digs and a block from junior Adi Bezemek.

Onalaska 3, Central 1

LA CROSSE — The Hilltoppers (16-8, 5-3) took over sole possession of second place in the conference by beating the RiverHawks 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 25-18 at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium.

Onalaska was led by senior Makena McGarry’s 19 kills and junior Natalie Marso’s 15. Junior Kendall Carlson also had eight kills for the Hilltoppers.

Sophomore Mackenzie Bauer had a team-high 29 digs for Onalaska, which also received 24 assists from freshman Isabella Eckstein and 11 digs and five aces from freshman Zayda Lawrence. McGarry added eight digs, Carlson three aces and five blocks and Eckstein three aces.

Central (12-12, 4-4), which beat Onalaska when the teams played on Sept. 2, was led this time by junior Kaitlyn Borge and 11 from junior McKenna Michaels. Junior Ellie Gillitzer had eight kills, three aces and five blocks, junior Celia Christopherson 30 digs and junior Mady Young 26 digs and six kills.

West Salem 3, Arcadia 0

ARCADIA — The first-place Panthers (15-5, 6-1) beat the Raiders (15-13, 3-5) by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-15.

Senior Josie Brudos led West Salem in digs (10) and aces (6) and tied for the team lead in kills with seven.
Senior Natalee Reichert and freshman Kensley Skifton tied Brudos with seven kills, and senior AJ Jehn led the Panthers in assists with 14.

Sparta 3, Logan 0

SPARTA — The Spartans handed the Rangers a 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 loss and beat them for the second time this season.

Senior Kaia DePaolo led Logan (3-9, 0-7) in kills with eight and digs with nine while adding two blocks. Junior Sophie Schmitz added seven kills and three digs.

The Rangers also received 15 assists from senior Alysha Hayes and 14 from junior Norah Keller.
