LA CROSSE — The Holmen High School boys soccer team began its MVC season with a 3-1 victory over Central at Fields for Kids on Tuesday.

The Vikings (3-2, 1-0 MVC) split four nonconference games before beating the RiverHawks (2-1, 0-1), who are ranked ninth in Division 2 by state coaches in a poll released this week.

Junior Ethan Johnson, senior Triton Gomez and senior Brock Needham scored for Holmen, which led 2-1 at the half before adding another goal.

Johnson and Gomez scored the first two goals — senior Apollo de la Rosa assisted on Johnson’s — before sophomore Micah Bratsch broke up the shot with an assist from senior Alex Heiderscheit.

Gomez scored his goal unassisted by putting a shot from 18 yards out into the left corner.

de la Rosa also assisted on Needham’s goal in the second half on a set direct kick.

Coach Ge Vang also pointed out the defense led by seniors Mason Miles, Roman Bowe, Ben Anibus and Matt Gamoke that made scoring opportunities difficult for Central, which began its season with wins over Prairie du Chien and Platteville/Lancaster.

Onalaska 3, Sparta 0

SPARTA — The Hilltoppers (1-2, 1-0 MVC) scored their first goals and picked up their victory of the season.

Senior Carter Flasch made good on a penalty kick in the 20th minute to give Onalaska a 1-0 halftime lead.

Sophomore Jameson Benrud and senior Samuel Sanglua then scored to add to the lead in the second half.

Benrud scored with an assist from senior Eden Ascencio-Urtiz on a header off a penalty kick in the 58th minute, and Sanglua was assisted by Anesh Champion on another header off a corner kick in the 66th minute.

Xander Wuensch stopped the only shot Sparta was able to put on goal in the first half, and Ben Zivney stopped all three shots he faced in the second.

Arcadia 3, Logan 0

LA CROSSE — The Raiders shut out the Rangers (0-4, 0-1 MVC) at Swanson Field but didn’t score their first goal until the 36-minute mark.

Ony Zaragoza scored three goals — two from long distance — for Arcadia, which is ranked fourth in Division 4.

Wisconsin Dells 5, Aquinas 1

WISCONSIN DELLS — Senior Jonathan Woolever scored the only goal for the Blugolds (2-1), who won their first two games of the season by a combined 10-1 score.
