ONALASKA — A nonconference game the Holmen High School boys soccer team hosted at the Onalaska Athletic Fields on Tuesday evening meant a lot more than the first game of the season.
The Vikings were welcoming Eau Claire Memorial to the area, and the Old Abes ended the Holmen’s season in a one-sided fashion during the WIAA postseason last fall.
The Vikings started the game aggressively in order to turn the tables and eventually emerged with a 1-0 victory.
Senior Apollo de la Rosa provided the winning goal after Memorial was called for a hand ball in the box during the 54th minute.
Brock Needham, Jacob Simmons and Micah Lamke anchored the Holmen attack, de la Rosa the midfield and Matt Gamoke and Romah Bove the back line.
Shae Hoffman, Deacon Vang, Triton Gomez and Ben Anibas keyed a defense that produced a shutout with Jack Baranowski stopping anything the Old Abes could send his way.
Aquinas 5, Richland Center 1
LA CROSSE — The Blugolds put 25 shots on a goal in a nonconference victory over the Hornets at Fields for Kids.
Senior Jonathan Woolever had a hat trick for Aquinas, and junior Gavin Corsi scored his first varsity goal.
Senior Cam Reinhart stopped nine of 10 shots Richland Center had.
Menomonie 2, Sparta 1
MENOMONIE — The Spartans scored on a goal by Arnold Aguilar in the 27th minute. The goal came off a free kick by Tanner Bjorkman.
Luis Mendoza stopped six of the eight shots directed at him in goal.
New Richmond 4, Sparta 1
MENOMONIE — Kolton Kaat helped the Spartans avoid the shutout by scoring off a corner kick from Bjorkman in the 78th minute.
Mendoza stopped 11 shots.
