Thursday baseball: West Salem, Holmen, Aquinas collect one-run victories

BLACK RIVER FALLS — The West Salem High School baseball team scored the tying and winning runs in the top of the seventh inning for an 8-7 Coulee Conference win at Black River Falls on Thursday.

The Panthers (2-1, 2-0) beat the Tigers for the second time in three days with three singles and a walk in the top of the seventh.

Shortstop Mekebo Anderson singled to right field to bring Henry Bakkum with the tying run before Brayden Waller scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of first baseman Terryn Boland.

Landon Rieber retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish the victory.

Anderson went 3 for 3 with a double and four stolen bases, while designated hitter Luke Grube doubled, went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs.

Waller, who played second base, also went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Panthers. Left fielder Aidan Hillyer and catcher Greyson Garbers also stole two bases each for West Salem.

Holmen 3, Sparta 2

SPARTA — The Vikings (2-0, 2-0 MVC) scored the first three runs, and first baseman Joe Meeter’s sacrifice fly plated the third run in the fifth inning.

Meeter also singled and stole two bases for Holmen, which also beat Sparta on Tuesday.

Second baseman Nolan Lomas was 2 for 2, and left fielder Riley Weisbecker doubled for the Vikings, who had Chris Holmes, Zach Byom and Colton Wucki combine on a three-hitter. Holmes pitched five shutout innings, struck out six, walked five and allowed two hits.

Aquinas 8, Onalaska 7

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (2-1, 2-0 MVC) scored twice in the first inning and added four runs in the fourth before holding off a comeback from the Hilltoppers (1-2, 0-2).

Infielder/pitcher Marcus Klar singled to drive in second baseman Parks Tobin with the eighth run in the fifth inning.

Third baseman Carson Zinnecker had an RBI single, and pitcher/left fielder Bradyn DeLong hit a sacrifice fly to give Onalaska two runs in the top of the sixth.

Pitcher/first baseman Aedan David was 2 for 3 and drove in two runs, and Tobin was 2 for 3 and scored twice. Klar also drove in two runs and scored three for the Blugolds.

David pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three.

Zinnecker was 3 for 4 with two runs driven in, and DeLong drove in two for the Hilltoppers.

Tomah 6, Logan 3

LA CROSSE — First baseman Jesse Lycke went 2 for 3, and the Rangers struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Timberwolves came back for the victory.

A two-run fifth inning got Logan within 5-3, but it couldn’t get any closer.

Center fielder Sam Diehl had one of the Rangers’ five hits and scored twice.

Prairie du Chien 8, Luther 3

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — The Knights (0-3) scored once in the second inning and twice in the third but never had a lead against the Blackhawks.

First baseman Max Lorenz and shortstop Calvin Rick each drove in a run for Luther, which had just two hits and fell behind quickly by allowing five first-inning runs.
