Friday baseball: Melrose-Mindoro, Caledonia still unbeaten after road victories

FOUNTAIN CITY — The Melrose-Mindoro High School baseball team scored all of its runs in the first four innings while handing C-FC a 14-1 five-inning defeat on Friday.

The Mustangs (3-0) scored four runs in the first inning and six in the third. They also shut out the Pirates over the final four innings.

Third baseman Eric Herzberg and outfielder Wade Adams each drove in three runs for Melrose-Mindoro, which had 12 hits. Herzberg tripled for one of his team’s three extra-base hits.

Pitcher/shortstop Colton Koss, designated hitter Brady Blaken, center fielder Brett Peterson and first baseman/pitcher Lane Rhyme all had two hits for the Mustangs. Koss doubled, and Peterson tripled.

Koss also pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out nine without walking a batter.

Caledonia 2, P-E-M 1

PLAINVIEW — The Warriors (3-0) remained unbeaten with a tight win over the Bulldogs.

Shortstop/pitcher Tyson Ginther reached on an error to lead off Caledonia’s third inning, moved up two bases on passed balls and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of center fielder/shortstop Will Allen.

The Warriors pushed their lead to 2-0 when third baseman/center fielder Max Schmitz singled to left field to bring home Ginther, who led off the inning with a double.

Left fielder Cooper Allen went 2 for 3, and Landon O’Heron pitched six innings and didn’t allow an earned run. P-E-M struck out six times, walked four and recorded one hit against him.
