Thursday boys golf: Onalaska wins first MVC meet of the season

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School boys golf team claimed a championship in the first MVC meet of the season on Thursday.

The Hilltoppers had four of the top five individual performers and shot a collective 299 to win by 17 strokes at the Coulee Golf Bowl.

Sophomore Colten Schroeder was medalist with a 1-over-par 73 for Onalaska, which finished comfortably ahead of second-place Aquinas (316) and third-place Holmen (322). Central/Logan was fifth at 361.

Schroeder was 1 over on the front nine and even on the back after recording three birdies and four bogeys. He birdied Nos. 10, 11 and 13.

That was enough to keep him one shot ahead of Sparta senior Ryder Erickson and two ahead of teammates Chasen Witt and Rylan Tomashek. Witt, a junior, and Tomashek, a sophomore, tied for third place at 3-over 73.

Witt recorded three birdies — Nos. 3, 4 and 5 — on his way to a 2-under front nine, and Tomashek had one birdie on the front and one on the back.

The second-place Blugolds were led by junior Jack Vogel, who tied for fifth at 76, and sophomore James Siegert, who was seventh with a 77. Onalaska freshman Asher Andel gave the Hilltoppers their final scoring round by tying Vogel for fifth.

Senior Logan Pinnow led the Vikings with an eighth-place score of 78 — he tied Onalaska’s Grayson Andel in that spot — and senior teammate Braylan Welch followed in 10th with a 79.

Sophomore Luke Jones (80) and junior Gabe Hundt (83) gave the Blugolds their final two scoring rounds, and senior Cole Vanlin (82) and senior Ayden Dirks (83) also scored for Holmen.

Central/Logan was led by junior Sid Hooymann’s 84. Senior DJ Trussoni (91) and juniors Tait Hatlevig (93) and Harper Kendle (93) also provided scoring rounds.
