MAUSTON — The West Salem High School softball team began its season with a 7-5 nonconference victory over Becker (Minn.) at the Woodside Sports Complex on Friday.
The Panthers (1-0) scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning, two more in the third and never trailed.
Senior Josie Brudos pitched a complete game and struck out 14 batters. All five runs she allowed were unearned as West Salem made four errors. Brudos also led off the fourth inning with a solo home run.
Right fielder Kylie Elsen was 2 for 3, tripled and drove in two runs for West Salem. Sophomore Madison Elsen also walked twice, scored twice and singled.

Northern Badger Classic
MENOMONIE — A handful of local teams competed at UW-Stout, and Luther’s boys scored 21 points to lead them.
The top individual finish belonged to Luther junior Nathan Dobberstein, who placed second in the boys high jump by clearing 6 feet. Senior teammate Ayden Livingston was fifth at 5-8.
Dobberstein also placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.17 seconds).
Luther junior Isabel Mueller was fourth in the pole vault (8-0) to lead local girls. Aquinas freshman Ella Krejchik tied for fourth in the high jump (4-6), and Holmen freshman Aubree Tuma was fifth in the long jump (15-3).
