Tuesday girls basketball: Melrose-Mindoro, West Salem get one-sided wins in WIAA regional openers

MELROSE — The Melrose-Mindoro High School girls basketball team won a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal for the fourth year in a row on Tuesday.

The fifth-seeded Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak and opened the postseason with a 65-29 victory over 12th-seeded Montello.

Melrose-Mindoro (12-13) earned a semifinal game at fourth-seeded Fennimore (15-9) on Friday by building a 27-point lead by the end of the first half.

Senior Cooper Zeman scored 14 of her team-high 22 points in the first half. She knocked down three of her team’s four 3-pointers, and two of those came after halftime.

Senior Anna Radcliffe also hit a 3-pointer and added 15 points for the Mustangs, who had lost four of their previous five games. Bristol Coats also scored 10 points for Melrose-Mindoro.

Montello was limited to 13 points in the first half and 16 in the second.

West Salem 103, Wautoma 18

WEST SALEM — The fifth-seeded Panthers (14-9) bounced back from a tough regular-season finale against Onalaska and advanced to a Division 3 regional semifinal at fourth-seeded Viroqua on Friday.

Senior Josie Brudos returned from illness and made four of her team’s 15 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 23 points to help give West Salem a third matchup with Viroqua — two of the four teams that shared the Coulee Conference championship. The Blackhawks won both regular-season games against the Panthers.

Sophomore Amelia Karr made two 3-pointers and scored 20 points for West Salem, which had a 68-8 lead by halftime. Sophomore Ava Hendrickson added 17 points and sophomore Brooklyn Lee made three 3-pointers for nine points.

New Richmond 77, Logan 44

LA CROSSE — The eighth-seeded Rangers (5-20) were outscored by 25 points in the second half by the ninth-seeded Tigers at the Steve Hole Field House in a Division 2 regional quarterfinal.

Senior Lydia Mason scored a team-high 21 points for Logan, which was within 29-21 after one half. Junior Emma Bacon made two 3-pointers and added eight points.
