WESTBY — The West Salem High School boys basketball team clinched at least a share of the Coulee Conference championship on Thursday with a 90-52 victory at Westby.
The Panthers (18-2 overall, 10-0 Coulee), who are seventh in Division 2 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, ran their winning streak to seven games and can win the conference outright with a win at Arcadia on Tuesday.
West Salem had 16 players score against the Norsemen and had five of them reach double figures.
Junior Drew McConkey led the way with 15, and senior Nate Dillaber followed with 13. Both of them made a 3-pointer.
Senior Tyson Labus had 12, senior Mekebo Anderson 11 and junior Elliott Corcoran 10 for the Panthers, who have won the Coulee five years in a row.
After playing at Arcadia on Tuesday, West Salem hosts Onalaska on Feb. 19, hosts Viroqua on Feb. 20 and plays at Central on Feb. 26.
Onalaska 84, Holmen 53
HOLMEN — The Hilltoppers (16-2, 9-1 MVC) scored 14 of the first 16 points to set the tone and beat the Vikings at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.
Onalaska, third in Division 2 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, is one win away from clinching a share of the MVC championship after beating the Vikings (12-9, 3-6) for a second time.
The Hilltoppers held Holmen to 18 first-half points while building a 26-point lead and led 20-4 when sophomore Tyler Kowal scored on a drive to the basket to cap a 12-2 run.
Kowal finished with a team-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Hilltoppers, who have won two games in a row heading into Saturday afternoon’s nonconference home game against Kimberly (11-8).
Senior Ian Kowal made four 3-pointers and scored 16 points, and sophomore Gavin McRoberts had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with his seven points.
Sophomore Wylder Burch scored 11 points and senior Rowan McGrath 10 for Onalaska, which holds the MVC lead over second-place Aquinas and Central — both 7-2 in conference games.
Holmen was led by senior Alex Berget’s 11 points and junior Jax Meyer’s 10. The Vikings made just 4 of 19 attempts from the 3-point line.
Luther 67, Viroqua 52
ONALASKA — The third-place Knights (10-9, 5-4 Coulee) completed a regular-season sweep of the Blackhawks and have won three of their past four games.
Luther outscored Viroqua by 11 points in the second half to pull away.
Freshman Javon Zenke had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Luther, which made 58 percent (23 of 40) of its shots inside the 3-point line. Zenke was 8 for 16 overall and added three steals.
Junior Trent Berg had 14 points and eight rebounds, senior Max Huelskamp 11 points and 10 rebounds and junior Logan Pierce 10 points for the Knights. Senior Brody Greeno added nine points and nine rebounds.
Caledonia 72, La Crescent-Hokah 60
LA CRESCENT — Sophomore Grant King made three 3-pointers and scored 21 points for the victorious Warriors (14-8, 6-1 Three Rivers-East).
Junior Jacoby Hammell added 15 points and senior Aaron Stemper 10 as Caledonia completed a regular-season sweep of the Lancers and won their second game in a row.
