Tuesday boys basketball: Central, Onalaska, West Salem, Holmen win nonconference games

CALEDONIA — The Central High School boys basketball team jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead and turned it into a 75-62 nonconference victory at Caledonia on Tuesday.

The RiverHawks, who are ninth in Division 2 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, were led by a big game from junior Gabe Servais and improved to 15-3 this season with their 11th win in 12 games.

Servais made four 3-pointers and scored 29 points for Central, which bounced back from a lost to third-ranked and MVC-leading Onalaska last week. He scored 16 points in the first half and made 11 of 12 free throws in the game.

Junior teammate Anthony Jones made two 3-pointers and scored 14 points to go with a team-high six rebounds, and Will Schilling added 14 points.

The Warriors (12-8) received a team-high 19 points from sophomore Grant King and 14 from sophomore Colin Stemper. Senior Aaron Stemper added 10 points for Caledonia, which was outscored by 14 points at the foul line.

Onalaska 91, Luther 60

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers, who are ranked third in Division 2, improved to 15-2 by taking care of the Knights (9-9).

Five Onalaska players reached double figures, and the team was led by sophomore Tyler Kowal’s five 3-pointers and 19 points. Senior Ian Kowal had 15 points and seven rebounds, and junior Brendan Chenault had 12 points.

Sophomores Gavin McRoberts and Bradyn DeLong added 11 and 10 points, respectively for Onalaska, which plays at Holmen (12-8) on Thursday and hosts Kimberly (11-8) in a nonconference game Saturday.

Luther never recovered from allowing 55 points in the first half. The Knights received 21 points and four rebounds from senior Max Huelskamp.

West Salem 75, Richland Center 54

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (17-2) won their sixth straight game after jumping up to the seventh spot in this week’s Division 2 state rankings.

West Salem had a 16-point lead by halftime and extended it from there behind double-figure scoring from five players.

Senior Tyson Labus scored a team-high 16 and was followed by senior Nate Dillaber’s 13. Junior Drew McConkey added 11, senior Spencer Kammel 10 and junior Elliott Corcoran 10.

The Panthers can clinch a share of their fifth straight Coulee Conference championship with a win at Westby (11-8) on Thursday.

Holmen 82, Eau Claire North 75

HOLMEN — The Vikings (12-8) shot 64 percent on attempts inside the 3-point line to beat the Huskies at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.

Junior Jayden Bartels scored a team-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting and added four rebounds and four assists for Holmen, which had lost two games in a row.

Senior Alex Berget made two of the team’s four 3-pointers — the Vikings attempted 15 — and finished with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Cohen Kendhammer had 15 points and junior Jax Meyer 11 and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Vikings made 16 of 19 free throws.

Mauston 82, Logan 76

LA CROSSE — The Rangers (2-17) lost for the sixth time in a row.

Sophomore Henry Bosch scored a team-high 21 points for Logan, which also received 16 from senior Dio Leone, 12 from junior Harper Kendle and 10 from sophomore Charlie Zellner.
