Thursday boys basketball/wrestling: Aquinas tightens up top of MVC with win over Tomah

LA CROSSE — The Aquinas High School boys basketball team moved into a tie for second place in the MVC with a 74-66 victory over Tomah at the Reinhart Athletic Complex on Thursday.

The Blugolds (16-3, 7-2) are a game behind Onalaska and tied with Central after beating the Timberwolves (8-10, 2-6) for the second time this season.

Senior Logan Becker and junior Calvin Bahr scored 19 points apiece to lead Aquinas, which is sixth in Division 3 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll. Becker made three 3-pointers, all four of his free throws and had 12 of his points in the second half.

Bahr was 7 for 8 on free throws and had 10 of his points in the first half, and senior Finley Strom scored 18 points with one 3-pointer in the second half and 10 of his points in the first.

Senior Ryan Johnson also scored 11 for the Blugolds, who host Winona Cotter (15-6) on Saturday.

Onalaska 64, Central 52

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (14-1, 8-1) — ranked third in Division 2 for this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll — took over sole possession of the conference lead by earning a regular-season sweep of the eighth-ranked RiverHawks (14-3, 7-2).

Sophomore Tyler Kowal scored a team-high 21 points for Onalaska, which also received 11 from sophomore Gavin McRoberts and nine from senior Ian Kowal.

Central was led by a game-high 26 points from junior Gabe Servais, who made six 3-pointers.

Sparta 52, Holmen 45

HOLMEN — The Vikings (11-8, 3-5 MVC) were taken down by the Spartans.

Sophomore Cohen Kendhammer led Holmen with 13 points and seven rebounds in a game it trailed 31-25 after one half.

Senior Alex Berget and junior Jayden Bartels each scored 10 points for the Vikings, who made 5 of 28 attempts from the 3-point line.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — The Hilltoppers dropped a couple of dual meets, but seniors Carter Beeler and Maximus Todd won twice.

Beeler (27-9) recorded two pins at 175, and Todd (36-3) pinned both of his opponents at 190.

Junior Ryan Dutton-Evans also picked up a victory and a forfeit at 126, and Sam Schmeling recorded one win at 215.
