Saturday wrestling: Holmen, G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro boys win team titles

SPARTA — The Holmen High School boys wrestling team crowned five individual champions on the way to winning the team title at the Sparta Invitational on Saturday.

The Vikings, who are ranked second in Division 1 by Wisconsin Grappler, scored 259.5 points to finish comfortably ahead of second-place Marshfield (210.5) and third-place DeForest (138).

Freshman Brendan Henderson (38-2, 113 pounds), sophomore Rex Lancaster (35-3, 120), junior Brock Needham (38-4, 126), sophomore Nathan Henderson (26-2, 138) and senior AJ Alesch (36-7, 157) all won brackets for Holmen.

Freshman Brady Needham (28-14, 106) and sophomore Sawyer Stetter (23-11, 144) added runner-up finishes for the Vikings.

Holmen’s girls scored 130 points and placed second to Reedsburg.

Junior Aini Anderson (32-2, 100), junior Kayleen Bazan (19-9, 107) and junior Kaytlynn Lambries (30-9, 126) won individual championships with dominant performances for the Vikings.

Bazan and Lambries won all of their matches by pin, and Anderson posted a technical fall in the semifinal round and a pin in the finals.

Arcadia Raider Challenge

ARCADIA — G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro had nine entrants place third or better on the way to a team championship and 565.5 points.

Saint Croix Central was second (528) and Aquinas third (470.5). Onalaska/Luther was eighth with 187 points.

The Titans, who are ranked sixth in Division 2 by Wisconsin Grappler, had individual champions in senior Gunnar Kremer (23-5, 126) and junior Aaron Dunigan (31-4, 190). Kremer followed up a first-round bye with three pins, and Dunigan had two pins, a tech fall and a major decision.

Senior Koda Purney (25-8, 120), senior Colton Koss (28-7, 132), junior Brody Banse (28-7, 144) and junior Braden Peterson (14-2, 175) were all second.

The third-place Blugolds, who are ranked first in Division 3 by Wisconsin Grappler, had five place third or better and champions in senior Roger Flege (24-4, 144), senior Waylon Hargrove (26-7, 165) and senior Tyson Martin (30-1, 285).

Flege beat Banse for the championship via tech fall at 4:55, and Hargrove had two pins and two decisions. Martin had two pins and two 15-0 tech falls.

Freshman Jacob Penzkover (28-9) was second at 150 for Aquinas.

Onalaska/Luther was led by senior Maximus Todd, who placed second at 190 and secured the 100th victory of his career. Todd (34-3) used two technical falls and one pin to advance to the championship bout, which he lost to Dunigan in a 14-5 major decision.

The Onalaska/Luther girls had three individual champions in sophomore Megan Ramsay (24-7, 126), junior Arianna Stugen (145) and freshman Evelyn Hooker (23-8, 165). Stugen and Hooker were credited with four wins each, and Ramsay won all three of hers.

Teammate Mya Foster (17-16) added a third-place finish at 120 after splitting four matches.

G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro had two second-place performers. Junior Payten Craig (28-8, 120) and sophomore Mikaela Dixon (25-6, 132) were both 3-1, and Craig pinned Foster in 3:06 during their matchup.

Aquinas freshman Kennedy Hazelton also recorded a third-place finish at 145 with two wins and two losses.

Lumberjack Invitational

WAUSAU — Logan/Central finished eighth with 90.5 team points in an invitational that was won by Auburndale’s 224.

Junior Calvin Arentz (33-5) won the championship at 175 with two pins to advance to the finals and a technical fall over Auburndale junior Carter Grassl when he got there.

Sophomore Emerson King (20-6) added a runner-up finish at 138 by winning three times before losing the championship bout.
