Thursday girls basketball: Aquinas moves MVC win streak to 121 games; Ketelhut scores 30 for Onalaska

LA CROSSE — The Aquinas High School girls basketball team had a much easier time extending their MVC winning streak on Thursday than it did earlier this week at Central.

The Blugolds pushed their MVC dominance to 121 straight victories with a 78-28 win over Holmen at the Reinhart Athletic Complex.

Aquinas (15-2 overall, 7-0 MVC) had a 49-13 lead after the first half and was led by junior Ava Fernholz and her game-high 21 points. Fernholz, who made 5 of 9 shots and all three of her 3-point attempts, averaged 19.5 points in wins over second-place Central and Holmen this week.

Aquinas senior Sammy Davis added 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds. Fernholz added seven assists and two steals and Davis three assists.

The Blugolds — ranked sixth in Division 3 for the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll — had 17 steals, and junior Adi Bezemek had four of them,

The Vikings (9-5, 3-4) had won two in a row and five of six games coming into the matchup.

Sophomores Makenzie Nunemacher and Aspyn Archer scored seven point each to lead Holmen. Archer made one of the Viking’s two 3-pointers.

Onalaska 69, Tomah 43

TOMAH — Sophomore Kayla Ketelhut scored 30 points as the third-place Hilltoppers (11-4, 4-2 MVC) won for the sixth time in seven games.

Ketelhut has averaged 25 points in Onalaska’s past four games, and she made two of her four 3-pointers during a 16-point first half.

Juniors Finley Walters and Olivia Passehl each added nine points for the Hilltoppers, who have only lost to first-place Aquinas and second-place Central in conference games. Passehl made three 3s and Walters two.

West Salem 53, Luther 45

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (6-5, 4-1 Coulee) outscored the Knights (7-6, 3-2) by 15 points in the second half to get the Coulee Conference victory.

Senior Josie Brudos scored 18 of her team-high 23 points after halftime and made 9 of 12 free throws in the second half after West Salem faced a 22-15 halftime deficit.

Sophomore Ava Hendrickson added 17 points for the Panthers and scored 11 of those with a 3-pointer in the second half.

Luther was led by sophomore Natalie Hackbarth’s three 3-pointers and 15 points. Sophomore Brinley Schmitz added 10 points for the Knights.

Sparta 65, Logan 48

LA CROSSE — The Rangers (3-12, 0-6 MVC) were outscored each half and by 13 points in the first half in their second straight loss.

Senior Kenna Streeck and junior Lilly Dettwiler scored 11 points to lead Logan and Streeck made two 3-pointers and scored all of her points in the second half. Dettwiler made 3 and had nine of her points in the first half.

Emma Bacon added nine points for the Rangers.
