VIOLA — The Onalaska/Luther co-op boys wrestling team won a championship and had three wrestlers win their brackets at the Lee Griffin Invitational on Saturday.
The Hilltoppers received winning individual performances from seniors Carter Beeler, Maximus Todd and Grady Dunnum on their way to a team score of 166.5, which held off second-place Boscobel/Wauzeka-Steuben’s 147.
Beeler (13-6) won at 175 pounds and followed up a first-round bye with two pins. Todd (19-2) won at 190, winning the final via major decision after getting there with two pins. Dunnum (15-3) won the 215 bracket with a pair of pins.
Senior Chaz Burrows (157) added a second-place finish, and sophomore Tristan Hodson (113), junior Michael Campbell (132) and junior Mason Thorson (165) were all third.
Onalaska’s girls scored 60 points and received runner-up performances from freshman Mya Foster (10-9, 120), sophomore Megan Ramsay (18-6, 126) and freshman Evelyn Hooker (17-5, 145).
West Salem/Bangor’s girls were led by a third-place finish from freshman Sofia Whitacre (12-6, 132).
Bluejay Challenge
MERRILL — The G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro boys won the team championship with a score of 237.5.
The Titans received bracket victories from juniors Braden Peterson at 175 and Aaron Dunigan at 190.
Peterson (4-0) won all of his matches and finished his championship match against Merrill’s Hunter Opper (22-2) via technical fall. Dunigan (20-4) had one pin and two technical falls once the meet moved to bracketed competition. He beat St. Croix Central’s Jayden Stave (16-6) via technical fall in just 2:15 for the title.
Senior Colton Koss (19-5, 132), junior Brody Banse (18-6, 144) and senior Jayce Stetzer (18-5, 157) all placed second for the co-op, and senior Koda Purney (15-6, 120), senior Gunnar Kremer (11-5, 126) and sophomore Brock Kaz (17-5, 285) were all third.
The Titans also had a champion in the girls champion with junior Peyten Craig.
Craig (21-7) won the 120 bracket and won three of the four matches she wrestled by pin. She recorded a major decision in the championship bout.
Sophomore teammate Mikaela Dixon (12-7) advanced to the title match at 126 but lost it. She pinned four opponents before that match.
Cadott Invitational
CADOTT — Holmen cruised to a team championship with 260 points to finish well ahead of second-place Glenwood City (152.5) and third-place Cadott (151).
The Vikings won five individual brackets and placed second in two others.
Freshman Brendan Henderson won at 113 and sophomore Rex Lancaster at 120.
Junior Brock Needham won at 126, senior AJ Alesch at 157 and senior Jagger Jepson at 285.
Henderson (25-2) recorded two pins and a technical fall, while Lancaster (23-3) followed a first-round bye with two technical falls.
Needham (25-4) pinned all four of his opponents and needed just 41 seconds to win his title match. Alesch (23-7) finished all four of his matches by technical fall, and Jepson (23-8) won by pin in all four of his matches.
Sophomore Sawyer Stetter (11-6, 144) and senior Noah Henderson (19-8, 150) were both second-place finishers, and freshman Brady Needham (20-10, 106), sophomore Noah Knapmiller (18-9, 165) and junior Colin Griffin (15-9, 175) placed third.
