Monday sports: Central girls, Melrose-Mindoro boys win basketball games

LA CROSSE — The Central High School girls basketball team continued its unbeaten season with a 70-35 nonconference victory over Winona on Monday at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium.

The RiverHawks (9-0), who moved up to the No. 3 spot in Division 2 of the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll this week, had a 38-16 lead by the end of the first half and received another big offensive game from senior Alahnna Simpson.

Simpson, an Eastern Illinois University commit, scored a game-high 23 points for Central, which goes on the road to put its 2-0 MVC record on the line against Tomah (2-6, 1-0) on Thursday.

Simpson is averaging 19 points per game for Central, which trails only Aquinas (10-1, 3-0) in the conference standings.

Freshman Ellie Apuan added 18 points and junior Ellie Gillitzer 13 for the RiverHawks.
