Saturday boys wrestling: West Salem/Bangor, Holmen win team championships

ELROY — The West Salem/Bangor co-op boys wrestling team crowned four individual champions on the way to winning a title at the Royall Invitational on Saturday.

The Catbirds received unbeaten performances from seniors Teghan Moore and Caden Anderson and juniors Lucas Fry and Justice Elam on the way to 244.5 team points, which placed them comfortably ahead of second-place Cashton (151.5).

Moore won the 126-pound bracket by pinning two opponents and winning by technical fall over two others. Anderson recorded three pins and a technical fall to win at 190.

Fry won his championship match at 165 by injury default after winning twice by pin, and Elam pinned three opponents with his longest match lasting 1 minute, 29 seconds at 175.

Senior Mason Chambers and sophomore Evan Smith earned runner-up finishes for West Salem/Bangor, and senior Kaden Stello was third. Chambers recorded a pin and two technical falls at 157, Smith had three pins before an injury stopped him in the finals, and Stello pinned three opponents before a decision in the placement match.

Aquinas freshman Peter White also won a bracket with two pins and one decision at 106.

Ellsworth Invitational

ELLSWORTH — Holmen won a team championship comfortably with 248 points to beat second-place P-E-M (199) and third-place New Richmond (182) in a field of 14.

The Vikings had four individual bracket winners and had 11 entrants finish sixth or better.

Freshman Brendan Henderson, junior Brock Needham, sophomore Nathan Henderson and senior Jagger Jepson all won championships for Holmen.

Brendan Henderson recorded two pins on his way to a win at 113, and Needham — ranked fifth in Division 1 by Wisconsin Grappler — had two pins before recording a 2-1 decision over 10th-ranked Waylon Deaton of River Falls in the finals at 132.

Top-ranked Nathan Henderson had two technical falls and a major decision to win at 138, and Jepson pinned two opponents before winning an ultimate tiebreaker in the finals.

Sophomore Rex Lancaster was second at 120 with a pair of technical falls, and sophomore Olie Strasser placed third at 126 with a 34-second pin in his placement match.

Sophomore Sawyer Stetter (144 with two pins), senior Noah Henderson (152), senior AJ Alesch (157) and sophomore Nolan Knapmiller (165 with two pins) all placed third and freshman Brady Needham (106) sixth for the Vikings.

Black River Falls Invitational

BLACK RIVER FALLS — The Onalaska/Luther co-op placed ninth as a team with 85 points and was led by third-place finishes from seniors Maximus Todd and Grady Dunnum.

Todd was third at 190 and recorded two pins before his loss and two technical falls after it. Dunnum won three matches by pin at 215.

Senior Carter Beeler added a fifth-place finish for the Hilltoppers and finished his day with three consecutive pins.

G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro junior Kobee DeYoung placed fourth at 157.
