Saturday’s volleyball/boys soccer report: Holmen wins Beast of the Northeast tournament

GRAND CHUTE — The Holmen High School volleyball team added to its season-opening momentum by winning all seven matches and claiming the championship of the Beast of the Northeast tournament on Saturday.

The Vikings beat Mosinee 25-20, 25-19 to win the 32-team invitational. Holmen was victorious in three matches on Friday and four on Saturday and will take an 8-0 overall record — it beat Sparta in the conference opener — into Tuesday’s MVC showdown against Aquinas at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.

The Vikings started the tournament with a 25-12, 25-9 win over Green Bay Notre Dame, a a 25-17, 25-9 win over Seymour and a 25-14, 25-23 victory over D.C. Everest.

Holmen added wins over West Salem (25-22, 22-14), Fox Valley Lutheran (25-16, 18-25, 1512) and West De Pere (25-15, 23-25, 15-11) before beating Mosinee for the championship.

Senior Charley Casey had four kills and senior Macy Kline seven digs in the championship win. Junior Moira Linse added three blocks and senior Hadley Teff three kills.

Aquinas won two of its seven matches at the same tournament, picking up wins over Randolph and Fond du Lac Springs. The Blugolds went three sets in losses to Oconto Falls and Pulaski and were swept by Mosinee, Manitowoc Lutheran and Marshfield.

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (1-1-1) picked up their first victory of a tough run of opponents early in the season by scoring in the second half.

Onalaska broke the scoreless tie when senior Colton Klein lofted a corner kick to the far post, and senior teammate Gavin Sommerfield reached it and scored on a header in the 48th minute. The Hilltoppers had a good chance to add to their lead but missed out on a chance at a penalty kick a few minutes later.
