WIAA state track and field: Blugolds move 2 boys relays to D2 finals

LA CROSSE — The Aquinas High School boys team has two relay qualifiers for Saturday’s Division 2 finals at the WIAA state track and field meet after qualifying in Friday preliminaries.

The Blugolds used Isaac Finch, Logan Becker, Caden Schams and Eli Horstman for qualifying times in both the 400- and 800-meter relays with times of 43.38 seconds and 1:39.17, respectively.

Aquinas is seeded sixth in the 800 relay and eighth in the 400 relay. The teams were third in their heat in the 800 and fourth in the 400.

Logan junior Maddie Cornett also turned a prelim into a spot in the Division 2 finals by running a great 100. Cornett was fourth in her heat and grabbed the eighth seed in the final with her time of 12.72.

Logan’s boys 1,600 relay team of Gabe Driscoll, Jacob Hackbarth, Briggs Schaffer and Andrew Leaver finished third in their heat with a time of 3:27 15 and are seeded eighth for the Division 2 finals on Saturday.

The West Salem girls 3,200 relay team of Anna Witte, Elise Flock, Faith Minard and Mia Olson placed 13th with a time of 9:48.24, and Logan junior Andrew Stanton was 14th in the 400 with a 51.37. Aquinas senior Thomas Gorman III was 15th in the 1,600 (4:27.19).

Finch didn’t qualify for the finals in the 100 (11.42), and West Salem’s boys 800 relay of Jackson Williams Jayden Hansen, Gideon Wolbrink and Jackson Seberg (1:32.39) failed to get out of the prelims. The same outcome came true for Arcadia junior Jaylie Dahl (200, 25.84) and West Salem junior Olivia Maki (300 hurdles, 46.06).

The Aquinas girls 400 relay (Division 2) and the Luther boys 800 relays (Division 3) were disqualified, and Luther’s Nathan Dobberstein did not run after qualifying in the Division 3 300 hurdles.
