WAUNAKEE — The La Crosse Lightning ran into a No. 1 seed and had trouble gaining any traction as its season came to an end in the WIAA regional semifinals on Friday.
But despite a 17-1 loss to Waunakee, the first-year co-op program finished the season with a 7-6 record and a postseason victory over Green Bay Notre Dame earlier this week.
CJ Kaye, a senior from Central High School, scored the co-op’s lone goal in a game the Warriors led 6-0 after one quarter and 11-0 by halftime. Kaye’s goal came in the fourth quarter.
The program is comprised of players from Central, Aquinas, Logan, Onalaska, Luther, Holmen and West Salem and took solid first steps as it prepares to join the Badger Conference — it includes Waunakee — next season.
