TOMAH — The West Salem High School softball team scored at least once in each of the first four innings to score a huge nonconference win in a battle between conference champions on Friday.
The Panthers (16-4), who won the Coulee Conference outright, scored three times in the top of the second inning and three more times in the fourth on the way to an 11-4 victory over MVC champion Tomah (18-4).
Senior catcher Megan Johnson led off the second inning with a home run and went 3 for 3 for West Salem, which won its ninth game in a row and became the first area team to beat the Timberwolves this season.
Johnson drove in three runs, and shortstop Madison Elsen drove in two for the Panthers, who led 8-3 after their three-run fourth inning.
Junior pitcher Josie Brudos struck out 12 batters and held Tomah to five hits. She walked two and allowed one earned run in a complete game.
Brudos also tripled while going 2 for 3 and scoring three times, while center fielder Makinlee Marshall doubled and scored twice.
West Salem had 10 hits and drew seven walks against Tomah pitchers Avery Brohmer and Mckenzee Perry.
Caledonia 15, Zumbrota-Mazeppa 1 (5)
CALEDONIA — The Warriors concluded a 16-4 regular season by pummeling Z-M and scoring four runs in each of the first two innings.
Freshman Avery Augedahl pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks and went 1 for 1 and drew three walks during her at-bats.
Shortstop Lily Wiebke was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, and third baseman Paizley Lange was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored.
Right fielder Nora Staggemeyer singled twice in three at-bats and drove in two runs for Caledonia
The MSHSL section tournament begins Monday.
Central 14, Logan 1 (5)
LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (9-13, 5-6) too care of the Rangers (4-17, 1-10) by pulling away after the first inning.
Sophomore shortstop Ellie Gillitzer hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, and junior Norah Holkup highlighted a six-run second with a three-run homer to get an 8-1 lead.
Junior Maleah Tomesh brought home the first two runs of the second with a double, and Terry Shawley singled home Tomesh. Shawley also had an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth, and Gillitzer stole home in the fourth.
Melrose-Mindoro 13, Whitehall 0 (5)
WHITEHALL — The Mustangs (17-3, 12-2) scored at least once in every inning and had a 10-0 lead after three innings against the Norse.
Emma Severson pitched a one-hitter and finished with five strikeouts without walking a batter.
Shortstop Cooper Zeman slugged two home runs and was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Third baseman Madeline Frauenkron homered while going 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
Second baseman Bella Rozek was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and catcher Hailey Hiles, first baseman Opal Buchanan and Severson all had two hits each. Hiles doubles twice and Buchanan once.
The Mustangs are tied with Eleva-Strum in the Dairyland-Large and play a road game against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 1, Aquinas 0
WISCONSIN RAPIDS — The Blugolds (8-10) were shut out on two hits in a nonconference game against the Royals.
Senior Kathryn Savoldelli had both of them. She singled to lead off the game and singled again in the fourth. She also reached safely on an error.
Assumption was held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth by Abby Ziolkowski, who allowed six hits, struck out four and walked none.
BASEBALL
Whitehall 12, Melrose-Mindoro 3
WHITEHALL — The Mustangs (13-5, 9-3) gave up the final nine runs after tying the Norse with a run in the fourth inning.
Junior Jacob Thesing tied the game when he singled home Eric Herzberg, who reached on a single of his own.
Thesing also drove in a run in the first inning, and Jayce Stetzer gave Melrose-Mindoro a 2-1 lead with a groundout that plated a run in the second.
