ELKHORN — The La Crosse Lightning co-op boys lacrosse team split two games in Elkhorn on Saturday.
The team, which is in its first high school varsity season and is run by Central with additional players from Aquinas, Logan, Onalaska, Luther, West Salem and Holmen, opened with a 17-5 loss to the Elks before coming back and beating Kenosha 13-7.
Kenosha (10-4) was able to cut a four-goal deficit in half during the third period of the second game, but the Lightning (4-5) put the Shoremen away with a strong rest of the second half.
La Crosse had a 7-3 halftime lead before Kenosha scored the first two of the second half. The Lightning scored six of the final eight to get the victory.
Central’s Grayson Veum finished with six goals and two assists for the Lightning, who also received four goals from Onalaska’s Shawn McKane.
Central’s Charlie Seehafer also had two goals and two assists and Luther’s Brandt Hundt 11 saves for La Crosse.
Elkhorn shut out La Crosse in the first quarter of the opening game, which was played on a turf field. The Lightning won the second game on a grass field.
The Elks scored seven times before the second quarter began to seize control of the game for good.
Veum had two goals and two assists in this one, while Luther’s Jax Hendrickson added two goals.
Hundt had 23 saves in goal.
The Lightning next play on May 17 at Sauk Prairie High School. A game against Sauk begins the day at 10 a.m. before a matchup with Pulaski at noon.
