Friday softball report: Melrose-Mindoro scores big win over eighth-ranked Blair-Taylor

MELROSE — The Melrose-Mindoro High School softball team turned one three-run inning into a big victory over eighth-ranked Blair-Taylor on Friday.

The Mustangs (15-2, 10-1), who lead the Large Division of the Dairyland Conference, ran their winning streak to four games by beating the Wildcats (13-5, 11-1), ranked eighth in Division 5 by state coaches and leaders of the Dairyland’s Small Division, 3-0.

Melrose-Mindoro scored all of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and let the pitching of senior Emma Severson handle the rest.

Severson held Blair-Taylor to three hits — two singles and a triple — while striking out six without walking a batter.

The Mustangs scored their fourth-inning runs with the help of three singles and one hit batter. Cooper Zeman, Bella Rozek and Opal Buchanan all hit one-out singles, and Rozek’s brought Zeman in to score the first run. Rozek and Buchanan later scored on errors by the Wildcats.

Blair-Taylor put three runners in scoring position but none scored, and Severson retired the final seven batters in order.

Randolph 6, Caledonia 2

RANDOLPH — The Warriors (13-3) lost for the second time in three games and couldn’t overcome a five runn inning by their opponent.

First baseman Elsa Blum, second baseman Vivian Kittleson and third baseman Paizley Lange were all 2 for 3 for Caledonia, which scored once in the first and once in the sixth but gave up five in the third. Kittleson drove in a run.

None of Randolph’s runs were earned, and freshman Avery Augedahl struck out nine, walked none and allowed four hits.

Tomah 5, Holmen 1

HOLMEN — The Vikings (6-8, 5-4) couldn’t stop the Timberwolves (16-2, 10-0) from clinching at least a share of their fifth straight MVC title.

Holmen managed just three hits, and all of them came from center fielder McKenna McHugh, who singled twice and doubled once. She scored the Vikings’ lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning when driven in by Taylor Everson.
