Thursday soccer report: Onalaska, Central tie; Holmen shuts out Aquinas

TODD SOMMERFELDT

ONALASKA — Both the Central and Onalaska high school girls soccer teams were hoping a big victory could put them in a tie for the MVC lead on Thursday night, but an even game at the Onalaska athletic field left both still looking up at first-place West Salem.

The RiverHawks and Hilltoppers used a 1-1 tie to move their MVC records to 3-1-1. Central is 6-2-1 overall and Onalaska 6-1-2 after both were beaten by the Panthers recently.

Sophomore Finley Walters scored with an assist from freshman Ellie Thesing to give the Hilltoppers a lead before senior Katie Biondo tied things up for the RiverHawks. This is the third year in a row that the teams have tied at least once.

Avery Cowley had nine saves for Onalaska, and Laura Lapp five for Central.

Holmen 2, Aquinas 0

HOLMEN — The Vikings (5-2-1, 3-2-0) scored once in each half and claimed a shutout while allowing the Blugolds (4-2-2, 1-2-2) to put just three shots on goal.

Holmen has shut out three straight opponents heading into Saturday’s nonconference games against Hudson and D.C. Everest at UW-Eau Claire.

West Salem 5, Tomah 1

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (7-1-2, 4-0-1) maintained the conference lead and bounced back offensively after a scoreless tie with Aquinas in their last game.

West Salem received goals from Kayla Olson, Emily Graham, Emily Bell and Sam Niemeier in a game that also included an own goal.
