Saturday softball report: West Salem splits, Melrose-Mindoro sweeps at invitationals

PORTAGE — The West Salem High School softball team scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for enough offense in what became an 8-7 victory over Waterford in its second game at the Portage Invitational on Saturday.

The Panthers (8-4) were limited to two hits in a 6-0 loss to Poynette in their first game of the day and made the most of four hits in beating the Wolverines.

West Salem needed just one hit in the six-run fourth, taking advantage of five walks and one Waterford error. Junior Josie Brudos drew one of those walks and broke the 7-7 tie when she scored on a passed ball.

Outfielder Makinlee Marshall went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and left fielder Brooklyn Lee drove in two runs.

Portage 7, Logan 2

PORTAGE — The Rangers (2-11) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Merrill but couldn’t overcome allowing eight runs in the top of the sixth.

First baseman Norah Keller was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and scored twice, and catcher Maria Weber was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs during a 12-hit performance for Logan. Sophie Schmitz Kenna Streeck and Mariana Rojo also had two hits each for the Rangers, who made seven errors.

Schmitz, Emma Bacon and Kaia DePaolo all had two hits in the loss to Portage. Bacon and Weber each drove in a run.

CASHTON — The Mustangs (10-1) ran their winning streak to five games with a pair of lopsided wins.
Seven of Melrose-Mindoro’s hits in the win over Cashton went for extra bases, and a nine-run seventh inning took care of the outcome.

Second baseman Bella Rozek doubled, tripled and hit a home run against the Eagles, finishing 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. First baseman Opal Buchanan also hit a home run and finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs.

Catcher Hailey Hiles and shortstop Cooper Zeman were both 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs, while center fielder Kelsey Young had two hits and left fielder Lauralee Stanton two hits and three RBIs for the Mustangs.

Emma Severson struck out five and allowed one unearned run on four hits in a complete game.

Severson hit a home run in the win over the Knights as Melrose-Mindoro recorded 14 hits. Hiles doubled again and went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Severson and Young both drove in two runs.

Luther (5-6) received two RBIs apiece from left fielder Kayla Schultz, third baseman Karlie Bauer and right fielder Keira Paus. Bauer also had two hits.

Amanda Yonkovich and Karly Miller recorded two hits apiece for the Knights, and Miller doubled.

EAU CLAIRE — The RiverHawks scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take control of the first game.

Center fielder Elena Wagner went 3 for 4 and third baseman Carmen Peterson 2 for 5 with a triple in the victory.
