Friday baseball report: Aquinas fights off West Salem comeback; Central wins opener in extras

TODD SOMMERFELDT

LA CROSSE — A two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Aquinas High School baseball team a second win in as many days after West Salem used a big top of the seventh to tighten up a one-sided game.

The Blugolds lost every bit of a seven-run lead when West Salem scored seven runs in the top of the seventh before Jonny Deets was hit by a pitch and Waylon Hargrove drew an intentional walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Isaac Shelfhout then singled to left field to score Deets with the winning run of a 9-8 victory at Lee Gilbert Field.

Aquinas (2-0) pitchers gave up six hits, walked two batters and hit another during the seventh-inning comeback. Drew McConkey, Terryn Boland, Will Schmidt and Luke Grube delivered RBI singles in the seventh, and Parker Demorest and Bennett Rieber each hit a sacrifice fly. Rieber’s sac fly scored Schmidt with the tying run before Aquinas got out of the inning without falling behind.

Schelfhout was 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Blugolds, who also received three runs scored and two stolen bases from Deets and two RBIs from Bayden Young.

McConkey, Grube and Jameson Skiften all went 2 for 4 for West Salem, and Boland and Grube drove in two runs apiece.

Logan 3, Altoona 1

LA CROSSE — The Rangers (2-0) scored twice in the first inning and again in the sixth, and Logan Hanson, Keegan Anderson and Bradley Check combined to strike out four and allow one earned run on six hits and two walks.

Check was also 2 for 2 with a double and a run driven in, and Logan claimed its 2-0 lead when Tommy Check and Bradley Check scored on an error.

Hanson pitched 4.1 innings and finished with two strikeouts and one earned run allowed on three hits.

Central 8, Prairie du Chien 4 (8)

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — The RiverHawks opened the season by going extra innings and scoring five runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Blackhawks.

Kenden Bishkofsky broke the 3-3 tie with a two-out single to score two runs, and Jake Larson and Liam Branson followed with run-scoring hits before Jude Alvarado singled to left and plated the final run.

Alvarado, who played shortstop and third base, was 3 for 5, and Derrick Pangier, Landon Smith and Branson were all 2 for 4. Pangier and Branson each drove in two runs, and Branson doubled.

Branson also pitched five innings and allowed just three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

La Crescent-Hokah 3, Caledonia 1

CALEDONIA — The Lancers scored three runs in the top of the first, and the Warriors (1-1) couldn’t catch up.

Tyson Ginther singled home Jack Schmitz in the second inning, but Caledonia couldn’t get anything else going.

Senior Garrett Konz struck out 10 and walked three. He allowed four hits, and three of those came during La Crescent-Hokah’s first inning.
