MSHSL girls basketball: Caledonia wins state consolation championship

ST. PAUL — The Caledonia High School girls basketball team finished its season with a second straight victory and consolation championship in Class AA at the MSHSL state tournament on Friday.

The sixth-seeded Warriors (29-4) won for the second time in as many days in the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul, this time getting by fourth-seeded Sauk Center 69-63 in the consolation final.

Caledonia was pushed to the consolation bracket by Minnehaha Academy in the quarterfinal round but gathered itself and put together two strong performances against Barnesville (22-8) and Sauk Centre (28-4).

The Mainstreeters somehow kept junior Aubrie Klug scoreless in the first half, but she stormed back in the second to score 19 points and lead the team for the game. Klug made two 3-pointers and connected on 3 of 4 free throws as the Warriors pulled away from a 24-24 tie after one half.

Sophomore Elsa Blum made two second-half 3-pointers and had 10 of her 18 after halftime, while senior Josie Foster made 7 of 8 free throws and had 11 of her 14 in the second half. Senior Sienna Augedahl made three 3-pointers — all in the first half — for nine points.
