Thursday girls basketball: Aquinas caps unbeaten MVC season by beating Sparta; Caledonia wins MSHSL opener

LA CROSSE — The Aquinas High School girls basketball team completed its 10th straight unbeaten MVC season and extended its conference winning streak to 114 with a 69-32 victory over Sparta at the Reinhart Athletic Complex.

Junior Sammy Davis scored 24 and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Blugolds (20-4, 12-0), who reached 20 victories for the ninth year in a row.

Davis made 11 of 21 shots and had two assists as Aquinas won for the 19th time in 20 games and had nine players score. Junior Alaina Elias added eight points and tied for the team lead with four steals. Ava Fernholz, Kathryn Savoldelli and Brooklyn Rohr also had four steals for Aquinas.

Sophomore Olivia Passehl also made two 3-ppointers and scored eight points for the Blugolds.

Caledonia 85, La Crescent-Hokah 25

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (24-3) won their MSHSL Section 1AA section opener over the Lancers and had a 56-10 lead by the end of the first half.

Nine players scored for Caledonia, which made nine 3-pointers and was led by junior Aubrie Klug’s five 3s and 28 points. Senior Josie Foster added three 3s and 18 points and Nicole Banse 11 for the Warriors.

Top-seeded Caledonia earned a game against ninth-seeded Zumbrota-Mazeppa at the Rochester Mayo Civic Arena on Monday.

Holmen 74, Tomah 36

HOLMEN — The third-place Vikings (12-11, 8-3) had a 21-point lead by halftime in completing a regular-season sweep of the Timberwolves at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.

Junior Charley Casey led the way with 18 points, and senior Danika Rebhahn added 13. Junior Macy Kline scored 12 and freshman Reese Tierney 11 for Holmen, which has won five of its last six games.

Onalaska 60, Chippewa Falls 33

CHIPPEWA FALLS — The Hilltoppers (12-11) climbed over the .500 mark with a one-sided win over the Cardinals.

Freshman Kayla Ketelhut scored a team-high 16 points, and sophomore Mara Klein added nine in a game Onalaska led 31-18 at the half. Ketelhut had 11 of her points in the first half.

Tatum Finley made two 3-pointers on her way to eight points, and Jenna Gansen added eight for Onalaska.

Arcadia 53, Viroqua 44

ARCADIA — The Raiders (13-10, 8-4) put the finishing touch on third place with their second win in three games.

Sophomore Madison Grotjahn scored eight points in each half and finished with a team-high 16 points for Arcadia, which pulled away from a tied game at the half.

Sophomore teammate Tatum Drazkowski also scored 16 and had 10 of those in the first half as the Raiders beat the Blackhawks for the second time.
