WIAA boys hockey report: Onalaska/La Crosse, Avalanche knocked out of playoffs

MADISON — The Madison Memorial High School boys hockey team scored twice in the second period and made that hold up through a scoreless third to eliminate 10th-seeded Onalaska/La Crosse 3-2 in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Tuesday at the Madison Ice Arena.

Onalaska/La Crosse (12-12) held its only lead at 1-0 when Carter Johnson scored with assists from Jack Egan and Logan Sauter at 15 minutes, 55 seconds, but Madison Memorial countered 10 seconds later to tie the game, then scored the first two goals of the second period for a 3-1 lead.

Johnson also scored the Hilltoppers’ second goal, this one on a power play set up by Jude Alvarado and Lukas Suchan late in the second.

Josh Pogreba has 23 saves for Onalaska/La Crosse.
