Boys wrestling: G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro wins Coulee Conference tournament

WESTBY — The G-E-T/Melrose Mindoro co-op boys wrestling team earned 367 points to hold off second-place West Salem/Bangor (345) and win the Coulee Conference Tournament championship on Friday.
The Titans crowned seven individual champions while winning the team title.

Koda Purney (38-6, 113 pounds), Colton Koss (36-2, 120), Layne Fry (27-11, 138), Jayce Stetzer (36-8, 144), Gunnar Johnson (41-5, 157), Braden Peterson (31-13, 175) and Aaron Dunigan (41-6, 215) all won brackets for G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro.

Purney’s big win was a 14-1 major decision over Arcadia’s Ony Zaragoza (27-8) and ended his only match by pin at 1 minutes, 13 seconds. Stetzer handed West Salem/Bangor’s Mason Chambers (33-11) a 14-9 defeat, and Johnson won by pin in the two matches he wrestled.

Peterson beat West Salem/Bangor’s Caden Anderson (35-12) by pin in 5:37, and Dunigan handled both Black River Falls’ Sullivan King (28-14) and West Salem/Bangor’s Miles Olson (35-14) by technical fall.

Teghan Moore (42-2, 106), Jackson Roesler (31-6, 132), Justice Elam (28-12, 150), Evan Smith (29-10, 165) and Trevor Arentz (41-8, 190) all won for the second-place Catbirds.

Roesler’s big win was a 12-10 decision over G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro’s Brody Banse (28-16), and Elam ended all four of his matches by pin. Smith won four of five matches and finished them all early — two by tech fall, two by pin — and Arentz pinned all five of his opponents.

Arcadia, which placed third with 192 points, had runner-up finishes from Zayden Sanchez (29-13) at 106 and Zaragoza.
