TOMAH — The Central High School girls basketball team kept some pressure on first-place Aquinas in the MVC with a 63-39 victory over Tomah on Friday.
The second-place RiverHawks (14-4, 6-1) collected their fifth win in a row since a loss at Aquinas and had four double-figure scorers in the process.
Sophomore Ellie Gillitzer scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the second half as Central pulled away from a 31-17 halftime lead. Junior Alahnna Simpson added 14 and junior Chloe Ackerman and freshman Malayah Simpson a career-high 10 each for the RiverHawks, who play at Onalaska (4-3, 8-9) on Tuesday and host the Blugolds (15-3, 9-0) on Thursday.
Gillitzer, who averages 9.1 points per game, reached double figures for the seventh time and is averaging more than 10 ppg over her past four games.
West Salem 49, Holmen 31
WEST SALEM — The Panthers (15-3) pulled away after the Vikings (7-9) were within four points early in the second half.
West Salem got back on track when junior Addy Ferguson knocked down two free throws, and senior Megan Johnson followed with a three-point play to push West Salem’s lead to 31-22 on the way to a fourth straight win.
Johnson scored a game-high 17 points and had 10 of those in the first half, which ended with the Panthers on top 28-18. Senior Danika Rebhahn made two 3-pointers in each half and scored a team-high 12 for Holmen, which lost twice to teams — Aquinas and West Salem — with a combined 30-6 record.
Senior Sydney Quick added 13 points for the Panthers and freshman Makenzie Nunemacher 10 for the Vikings.
Aquinas 78, Logan 18
LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (15-3, 9-0) denied the Rangers (3-14, 2-7) a second straight win and recorded their 111th consecutive conference victory.
Aquinas won its 14th game in a row and was up 34-7 at halftime after allowing Logan one first-half field goal.
Eleven players scored for the Blugolds, who made four 3-pointers in each half. Senior Emma Dobbins and junior Alaina Elias each scored 16 to lead the way. Elias also had eight of her team’s 28 steals.
Junior Sammy Davis added 10 points, and Olivia Passehl made three 3-pointers for nine for Aquinas. Sophomore point guards Ave Fernholz and Eva Willenbring combined for eight steals, and Fernholz had seven assists.
Logan entered the game looking for a second straight win after topping Tomah on Tuesday.
Onalaska 53, Sparta 35
SPARTA — The Hilltoppers (8-9, 4-3) moved into a tie with Holmen for third place in the MVC by completing a regular-season sweep of the Spartans (8-11, 2-7).
Sophomore Finley Walters made four 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 20 points for Onalaska. She made two of those 3s and had eight points in the first half as the Hilltoppers built a 22-15 lead.
Sophomore Natalie Marso added nine points and senior Tatum Walters seven for the Hilltoppers.
