Saturday wrestling report: Holmen wins Sparta Invitational; G-E-T/Mel-Min victorious at Arcadia

SPARTA — The Holmen High School boys wrestling team crowned four individual champions on the way to 214 points and a team championship at the Sparta Invitational on Saturday.

Nathan Henderson (120 pounds), Turner Campbell (132), AJ Alesch (150) and Jonathon Lamprich (165) all won their brackets for the Vikings, who beat Reedsburg (185.5) and Marshfield (172.5) in the 17-team field.

Henderson (31-4) won twice by technical fall, then decisioned Reedsburg’s Kade Parrish (27-8) 12-6 in the finals. Campbell (25-2) pinned all three of his opponents and ended his title match with DeForest’s Cooper Feiner (24-12) in 1:01.

Alesch (14-4) won by technical fall and pin before handing Monona Grove/McFarland’s Joel Karls (26-7) 4-1 in the championship match. Lamprich (27-5) had a pin and decision to qualify for the finals and beat Monona Grove/McFarland’s Xavier Denman (28-9) 4-3 for the title.

Rex Lancaster (34-4, 106), Brock Needham (25-8, 126) and Noah Henderson (29-10, 138) all placed second for the Vikings.

Raider Challenge

ARCADIA — The G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro co-op came away victorious in a field of 18 teams at Arcadia.

The Titans piled up 511 points to finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Menomonie (394) and third-place Cadott (383) behind individual championships from Koda Purney (113) and Aaron Dunigan (215) and second-place performances from Colton Koss (120), Jayce Stetzer (144), Gunnar Johnson (157), Landon Windsor (165), Braden Peterson (175) and Cale Pickering (190).

Purney (30-6) followed his first-round bye with two first-period pins before scoring an 8-0 major decision over Arcadia’s Ony Zaragoza (21-7) in the finals. Dunigan (33-6) pinned his first three opponents before a decision put him in the finals and a major decision gave him the championship.

Koss (28-2), ranked second in Division 2 by Wisconsin Grappler, had his bid at the title stopped by Amery’s top-ranked Lane Anderson (21-1) in a 1-0 championship match.

Stetzer (29-7) won three matches by pin and another by technical fall, and Johnson (33-5) had two pins and a tech fall. Windsor (20-14) won twice by pin and twice by tech fall, and Peterson (25-11) won twice by pin and twice by major decision. Pickering (21-14) had one pin and one tech fall.

Arcadia placed fifth as a team with 351 points and was led by the second-place finish from Zaragoza, who pinned his way to the title match against Purney.

Adalberto Ortiz (22-11, 144) and David Aguilar (28-9, 165) both placed third for the Raiders.

Kalyce Sobotta won twice by technical fall without allowing a point and recorded a 14-second pin to win the 132-pound girls bracket and improve her record to 23-3.

Ava Knopps (4-8) also won the 185 bracket for Arcadia by pinning both of her opponents.

Lumberjack Invitational

WAUSAU — West Salem/Bangor finished fourth out of 20 teams with 411.5 points. Logan/Central was 12th at 208.5.

Teghan Moore (27-2), ranked third in Division 2 by Wisconsin Grappler, won a championship for the Catbirds at 106. He beat Wabeno’s Reegan Roy (41-2), who is ranked first in Division 3, 12-6 in the championship. He also beat Marathon’s Taylor Underwood (33-3), ranked second in Division 3, 9-8 in the semifinals.

Jackson Roesler (17-12, 138) was a runner-up for West Salem/Bangor, and Miles Olson (24-11, 215) placed third for the Catbirds. Trevor Arentz (27-8, 190) and Evan Smith (20-8, 165) placed fourth.

Calvin Arentz (23-11, 165) had the best finish for La Crosse as runner-up. Noah Nicholson (17-11, 215) wound up fourth for the co-op.
