Thursday boys basketball report: La Crosse Logan holds off Reedsburg for nonconference win

LA CROSSE — The Logan High School boys basketball team used a 12-point second half from freshman Tommy Check to finish off a 58-53 nonconference victory over Reedsburg at the Steve Hole Field House on Thursday.

Check made two 3-pointers and he stepped forward after a scoreless first half and helped the Rangers (5-8) snap a four-game losing streak and win for the first time since Jan. 4.

Sophomore Bubba Leaver scored a team-high 14 points and made two 3-pointers during an eight-point first half. Junior Adrian Bye made three 3s and scored 13 points for Logan, which welcomed the return of Jacob Hackbarth from injury but played without senior Bradley Check. Hackbarth scored seven points.

Luther 59, Westby 58

ONALASKA — The Knights used a defensive stop on the final possession to squeak past the Norsemen.
Second-place Luther (10-4, 5-2) beat Westby for a second time but emerged victorious in a game that was much closer than the 58-31 win it claimed earlier this season in Westby.

Senior Will Huelskamp scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds as the Knights won their third game in a row. Teammate Logan Pierce added a pair of 3-pointers and 12 points for Luther, which led 31-26 at the half.

Griffin Nelson made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points for Westby.

West Salem 98, Viroqua 57

VIROQUA — The first-place Panthers (11-3, 7-0) pulled away from a 14-point halftime lead and scored 49 points in each half to beat the Blackhawks for a second time and win their fifth game in a row.

Nine players scored at least five points for West Salem, which outscored Viroqua by 27 points after halftime.

Senior Kyle Hehli scored all of is team-high 19 points in the first half. He made five 3-pointers. Sophomore Drew McConkey made four 3-pointers and added 17 points for the Panthers.

Carter Pontius scored 13 points and Nathan Dillaber and Tyson Labus 11 each for West Salem. Senior Nathan Karr returned from injury to score 10 points for West Salem. He made two of the Panthers’ 19 3-pointers.

Arcadia 77, Black River Falls 57

BLACK RIVER FALLS — The Raiders (7-7, 3-3) won their second game in a row after becoming the first team to beat C-FC this season one week ago.

Senior Kaiden Rotering made three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 19 points for Arcadia, which had a 39-19 lead by the end of the first half.

Senior Ted Teske led the way for the Raiders in the first half with 13 of his 16 points. Arcadia coach Ryan Sonnentag said Teske did his damage by getting to the rim.

Carter Wegman added two 3-pointers and 12 points for the Raiders, who will try to climb above the .500 mark with a conference game at Viroqua on Friday.
