Saturday basketball report: Late Leaver basket pushes La Crosse Logan boys past Eau Claire North

LA CROSSE — Sophomore Bubba Leaver scored the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left, and the Logan High School boys basketball team followed a defensive stop with a Bradley Check free throw in a 66-64 nonconference victory over Eau Claire North at the Steve Hole Field House on Saturday.

The Rangers (4-4) pushed their record back to the .500 mark with their second win in three games, and senior Jacob Hackbarth’s 21 points led four double-figure scorers.

Hackbarth scored 16 points in the second half as Logan erased a 13-point halftime deficit. He made all six of his second-half free throws and was 7 for 7 from the foul line during the game.

Freshman Tommy Check added 14 points, and Bradley Check contributed with a pair of 3-pointers on his way to 13. Leaver finished with 11 and nine of those came after halftime.

Verona 92, West Salem 78

VERONA — The Panthers (6-3) suffered their third loss in four games as the Division 1 Wildcats (9-1) won their ninth game in a row.

Junior Nathan Dillaber made five 3-pointers — three in the first half and two in the second — on his way to a game-high 28 points for West Salem which was outscored by 14 points in the second half after getting their tied at 42.

Senior Nathan Karr made three 3s and scored 19 points for the Panthers, who are tied with Luther for first place in the Coulee Conference. Kyle Hehli added 13 points for West Salem, which hosts G-E-T on Tuesday, Luther on Friday and plays its next four games at home.

GIRLS

Durand-Arkansaw 50, Luther 44

DURAND — The Knights (8-2) had an eight-game winning streak snapped when they couldn’t score down the stretch against the Panthers (8-2).

Durand-Arkansaw built an 11-point lead in the first half only to have Luther charge back and go in front 31-30 midway through the second.

Freshman Natalie Hackbarth scored a team-high 11 points with three 3-pointers, and freshman teammate Cara Unke added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, but the Knights made just 32 percent of their shots (16 of 50).
