Friday boys basketball report: West Salem forces tie atop Coulee Conference

WEST SALEM — The West Salem High School boys basketball team forced its way into a tie for the Coulee Conference lead by handing visiting Arcadia a 63-53 defeat on Friday.

The Panthers (6-2, 3-0) had an 18-point lead sliced to eight in the second half but recovered behind a 23-point performance from senior Nathan Karr, who made three of the team’s six 3-pointers. Senior Kyle Hehli added 11 points and junior Nathan Dillaber 10 as West Salem put behind it a two-game losing streak and tied Luther for the conference lead.

The Raiders (4-5, 2-2) received a team-high 15 points from sophomore Carter Wegman, and he had nine of those in the second half. Senior Nolan Smith had nine of his 13 in the second half, and freshman Deklyn Grzadzielewski made all eight of his free throws and scored 13.

Sparta 68, Luther 54

SPARTA — The Knights (7-2) lost their second game in as many days after starting the season with a seven-game winning streak.

Luther was outscored by seven points in each half, made just 3 of 13 attempted 3-pointers and scored 23 second-half points.

Senior Will Huelskamp scored a team-high 15 points and added nine rebounds, and senior Synclair Byus added 14 points. Junior Brody Greeno had nine points and senior Jackson Kendall had seven assists.
