Monday high school report: Onalaska Luther records basketball sweep at Mondovi

MONDOVI — The Onalaska Luther High School boys basketball team will take an undefeated record into a city showdown Thursday at Onalaska after pulling out a 53-51 nonconference victory at Mondovi on Monday.

The Knights (7-0) used 21 points and six rebounds from senior guard Synclair Byus to beat the Buffaloes.
Senior guard Jackson Kendall added nine points and five steals. Byus made 7 of 11 shots, Jack Petersen knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, and Max Huelskamp pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Knights and Hilltoppers (6-2) tip off at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Onalaska Luther 38, Mondovi 30

MONDOVI — The Knights (7-1) won their seventh straight game and played without senior Macie Neumeister, who was ill.

Senior Allie Zittel made three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points for Luther, which led 18-16 at halftime and gave itself some breathing room in the second half.

Freshman Brinley Schmitz added eight points for the Knights, who have sole possession of first place in the Coulee Conference and play at Cashton on Thursday.

Aquinas 70, Sun Prairie West 49

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (7-3) ran their winning streak to six games with a one-sided victory over a Division 1 school.

Sophomore Olivia Passehl made five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 19 points for Aquinas, which had a 39-25 lead after one half at the Reinhart Athletic Complex.

Junior Sammy Davis added 13 points and six rebounds, and senior Kathryn Savoldelli scored all 10 of her points in the second half.

Passehl made 5 of 9 attempts from beyond the 3-point line, and sophomores Eva Willenbring and Ava Fernholz combined for nine assists fo the Blugolds.
