Boys basketball report: West Salem tops Holmen, Onalaska and Caledonia set up showdown

WEST SALEM — The West Salem High School boys basketball team brought to an abrupt end on Tuesday a three-game winning streak pieced together by Holmen to start the season.

The Panthers (4-0) scored 24 of the first 33 points on the way to a 79-55 nonconference victory over the Vikings (3-1).

West Salem had a 31-11 halftime lead and rode its man-to-man full-court defense to build the advantage. The Panthers had five players score at least eight points, and senior Kyle Hehli led the way with 19. He scored 15 of those in the first half.

Nathan Karr added 13 points and Carter Pontius 10 points (two dunks) and 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double.

Holmen received a 16-point performance from Keenan Eisermann and 10 points from senior Kaiden Wilber.

Aquinas 90, Westby 58

WESTBY — The Blugolds (3-0) outscored the Norsemen (1-3) by 23 points in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Junior Logan Becker scored 17 of his game-high 25 points after halftime and made five 3-pointers for Aquinas, which pulled away from a 42-33 halftime lead. Calvin Bahr scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half and Brayden Young 10 of his 16 in the second as the Blugolds remained unbeaten. Trey Bahr also scored 15 and Fin Strom 11 for Aquinas.

Westby stayed close in the first half behind 18 of senior Devin Nedland’s team-high 20 points. Griffin Nelson scored 12 and Gavin Larson 10 for the Norsemen, who lost their second game in a row.

Onalaska 85, Winona 37

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (3-0) remained unbeaten heading into Thursday’s home game against Caledonia by blasting the Winhawks.

Senior Broden Steiner scored a team-high 22 points, and freshman Tyler Kowal added 16. Steiner is averaging 18.3 points through three games.

Teammates Jack Smith and Brendan Chenault scored 10 and eight points, respectively.

Caledonia 84, La Crescent-Hokah 62

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (2-0, 2-0 Three Rivers) also remained unbeaten with a comfortable victory over the Lancers (1-2, 1-1).

Senior Mason King scored 20 points with five 3-pointers and classmate Garrett Konz 15 with one 3 for Caledonia, which kicked off a three-game week with Thursday’s game at Onalaska and Friday’s at Fillmore Central.

Reid Klug also had 15 points and a 3-pointer for the Warriors, and freshman teammate Grant King added 14.

La Crescent-Hokah, which trailed 45-27 at the half, was paced by Ryan Nutter’s 15 points and Keaton Holter’s nine.

Onalaska Luther 74, Tomah 60

TOMAH — The Knights (3-0) dominated the second half after the Timberwolves (1-2) led by two points at halftime.

Junior Brody Greeno made all eight of his shots — four inside the 3-point line and four outside it — and scored 28 points for Luther in its third straight victory. Senior Will Huelskamp also scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and had 12 rebounds.

Synclair Byus added 11 points for the Knights, who benefitted from solid second-half play from reserves Jack Petersen and Logan Pierce, according to coach Dan Unke.

Tomah had a 30-28 lead after one half and received 24 points from sophomore Quinn Gerke, who made three 3-pointers.

Sparta 74, Black River Falls 61

SPARTA — Senior Gavin Rhead pushed his scoring average to 22.3 points per game by scoring 20 of his 32 points in the second half for the Spartans (3-1) in their second consecutive victory.

Teammate Everett Laufenberg made five 3-pointers for 15 points, and Kayden Katt and Grant Geier added 11 and 10, respectively for Sparta.

The Tigers (0-3) were outscored by nine points in the second half and received 22 points from sophomore Braylon Backaus and 11 each from Cecil Lopez and Lyndon Greengrass.

Arcadia 71, Eleva-Strum 31

STRUM — The Raiders (2-2) won their second game in a row and had a 41-20 lead by halftime.

Senior Kaiden Rotering scored 25 points and hit two three pointers and all three of his free throws for Arcadia. Teammate Carter Wegman scored 12 points, and teammate Max Blaschko hit three 3-pointers on his way to 10.

Bangor 50, Necedah 33

BANGOR — Bangor (1-3) collected its first win of the season in a Scenic Bluffs Conference opener.

Junior Brody Edwards finished with a team-high 12 points and had eight of those in the second half. Junior Hayden Massman chipped in nine.

Royall 65, Cashton 15

CASHTON — The Panthers (3-0, 1-0) held the Eagles (0-4, 0-1) to two second-half points.

Carter Uppena made two 3-pointers and scored 23 points for Royall, which led 40-13 at halftime. Ben Crneckiy added 17 points and Landon Lipke 14 for the Panthers.

Brookwood 57, Wonewoc-Center 48

WONEWOC — Sophomore Brennen Mack made four 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead the Falcons (1-2, 1-0) to their first victory.

Sophomore Julian Cunitz added 13 points and junior Jackson Cunitz 12 for Brookwood, which had a 28-18 halftime lead.
