Tuesday boys basketball report: Central wins opener, Brone scores 44 for G-E-T

The Central High School boys basketball team kicked off a new season with a 66-50 nonconference victory over Eau Claire North on Tuesday.

The RiverHawks (1-0) picked up the road victory by dominating the boards and making 19 of 23 free throws.

Senior guard Derrick Pangier made all 10 of his attempts from the foul line and led Central with 22 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Anthony Jones added 16 points and four rebounds and junior Joey Pretasky seven points and six rebounds for the RiverHawks.

G-E-T 81, Mauston 60

MAUSTON — The Red Hawks (1-0) won their debut under coach Ian Anderson, who was the beneficiary of a 44-point performance from junior Mason Brone.

Brone, a 6-foot-3 guard, is stepping into a more prominent role for G-E-T after averaging 12.1 points and 5.5 assists per game as a sophomore.

Jackson Burns, Omar Jimenez and Brecken Ebersold all added eight points for the Red Hawks.

Onalaska 60, Wisconsin Rapids 44

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — The Hilltoppers (2-0) took care of the Red Raiders behind a trio of double-figure scorers.

Junior Ian Kowal, freshman Tyler Kowal and senior Broden Steiner all scored 12 points for Onalaska.

Onalaska Luther 71, Bangor 42

BANGOR — The Knights (1-0) blasted the Cardinals by holding them to 10 first-half points and cruising to a victory.

Senior Will Huelskamp made 7 of 9 shots and scored a team-high 18 points for Luther, which made 31 of 61 shots overall and 28 of 43 from inside the 3-point line.

Senior Synclair Byus added 14 points and a team-high five assists, sophomore Logan Pierce 12 points with two 3-pointers and junior Max Huelskamp 10 points to go with a team-high six rebounds for the Knights.

Elk Mound 65, Arcadia 62 (2 OT)

ELK MOUND — Senior guard Kaiden Rotering made a 3-pointer to force the second overtime and led the Raiders (0-2) with 20 points in a game Arcadia coach Ryan Sonnentag said had a tournament atmosphere.

Junior Max Blaschko got a look at a 3-pointer at the end of the second overtime, but the shot bounced off the rim as time expired.

Westby 72, Cashton 33

CASHTON — Devon Nedland scored a team-high 14 points and tied for the team with nine rebounds for the Norsemen (1-1), who had a 43-14 lead by halftime.

Griffin Nelson made three 3-pointers and added 13 points for Westby, which also received 11 points and nine boards from Gavin Larson and 10 points from Jadon Johnson.

The Norsemen made 10 3-pointers.

De Soto 48, Cassville 43

CASSVILLE — The Pirates (1-0) held a scoring advantage in both halves to post the victory.

Junior Jackson Trussoni scored a team-high 11 points for De Soto, which led 21-19 after one half and extended the lead a bit from there. Senior Harris Krueger and sophomore Adam Venner added seven points for the Pirates. Venner and Finn Wrobel combined for 13 points after missing significant time due to injuries last season.
