Friday’s girls sports report: Aquinas starts basketball season with win

BEAVER DAM — The Aquinas High School girls basketball team used a big run early in the second half to open its season with a nonconference victory over Beaver Dam on Friday.

The Blugolds turned a tie game into a 19-point lead that keyed a 56-38 victory over the Golden Beavers in a game at the two-day Beaver Dam Classic.

Aquinas (1-0) pulled away from a 28-28 tie by scoring 22 of the next 25 points for a 50-31 advantage that essentially ended the game.

Junior Sammy Davis had 16 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots for the Blugolds, who also received three 3-pointers and 13 points from sophomore Olivia Passehl.

Davis started the 22-3 run with a drive to the basket, and Passehl followed it with a 3 from the top of the key. Sophomore Ava Fernholz then hit a jumper in the lane, and sophomore Eva Willenbring followed with a bank shot in the lane for a quick 37-28 advantage.

Junior Alaina Elias added nine points and Fernholz eight. Elias scored five of hers in the first half, and Fernholz all of hers in the second.
Elias added four steals, and senior Kathryn Savoldelli pulled down four offensive rebounds and four defensive rebounds.

Aquinas continues at the Beaver Dam Classic with a 12:30 p.m. tipoff against Kettle Moraine Lutheran on Saturday.

Prairie du Chien 68, Logan 23

The Blackhawks held the Rangers to eight points in the second half in a one-sided victory at the Steve Hole Fieldhouse.

Senior Greenlee Krahn scored a game-high 21 points for Prairie du Chien and made seven 3-pointers to get them. Sophomore Karly Kramer added three 3s and 16 points for the Blackhawks, who also received 12 points from senior Tannah Radloff, who had 10 in the first half.

Logan junior Lydia Mason scored eight points to lead her team. Sophomore teammate Emma Bacon made a 3-pointer and added six.
