WIAA football roundup: Logan, Prairie du Chien head to state semifinals

MEDFORD — The Logan High School football team went down to the wire in its WIAA Division 3 sectional championship game against top-seeded Medford on Friday before senior Bradley Check did Bradley Check things to propel his side to the state semifinals.

Check rushed for one fourth-quarter touchdown, then completed a 13-yard scoring pass to Maxim Roberts before adding the two-point conversion run himself to help the Rangers (11-2) collect their fourth win in a row with a 51-48 victory over the Raiders (10-2).

Check rushed for 282 yards and completed 9 of 15 passes for another 185 during a six-touchdown performance that sends Logan to a state semifinal matchup with Green Bay Notre Dame (12-0) next weekend.

Check’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Roberts came with 21 seconds remaining and gave the Rangers a lead for good in a game that never had its teams separated by more than seven points. Tommy Check ended Medford’s final possession with an interception that allowed Logan to kneel out the clock.

Bradley Check rushed for four touchdowns to push his season total to 33 and completed his 14th and 15 touchdown passes to get the Rangers into the state semifinal round for the first time since 2013.

Logan needed all of that production to hold off Medford running back Paxton Rothmeier, who rushed for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the output, the Rangers managed to force Medford to throw eight passes. Just two of them were completed for 35 yards, although one was for a touchdown.

The Raiders took a 42-36 lead into the fourth quarter after Rothmeier closed out the third with an 18-yard touchdown run. Check then gave his team its first lead since early in the third quarter at 43-42 with a 2-yard TD run that was followed by a Jacob Hackbarth extra point with 6:27 left.

Medford took its final lead at 48-43 with 2:52 left before Logan made good on its final possession, and Check hit Roberts for the final score. Roberts also rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown to go with two TD catches, while Hackbarth caught four passes for 90 yards.
