High school roundup: Caledonia football, Aquinas soccer post playoff wins

CALEDONIA, Minn — The Caledonia High School football team scored all of its points in the first half on the way to a 20-12 victory over visiting Lewiston-Altura in an MSHSL Section 1AA semifinal on Saturday.

The Warriors (7-2) won their second straight game and for the fifth time in six games with the help of two Ethan Stendel touchdown passes in the second quarter.

Second-seeded Caledonia next travels to Winona’s Paul Giel Field to take on top-seeded Chatfield (9-0) in a section final at 7 p.m. Friday. The Gophers beat the Warriors 20-13 on Sept. 13.

Stendel completed 16 of 24 passes for 157 yards and the two touchdowns. He gave Caledonia a 7-6 lead by kicking an extra point after a Noah Schroeder touchdown run in the first quarter.

Stendel then connected with Will Allen for a 15-yard touchdown and Fischer Wait for a 5-yarder before halftime to put the Warriors ahead 21-6. Tristan Meyer was Caledonia’s top receiver with six catches for 73 yards.

Ben Stemper rushed for a team-high 112 yards on 19 carries, and Stendel added 68 on 13 attempts.

State Team Tournament

MADISON — Aquinas advanced to the championship match after posting a win in the semifinal, but didn’t bring home the title.

The second-seeded Blugolds (25-4) opened with a 5-2 semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Kohler, but top-seeded Brookfield Academy beat them 4-3 for the title at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

DIVISION 2

Marshfield 1, Holmen 1 (5-4 shootout)

GALESVILLE — The third-seeded Tigers beat the second-seeded Vikings (14-3-3) and became the first team to score on them since Oct. 8.

Holmen outscored its opponents by a margin of 85-20 this season.

DIVISION 3

Aquinas 2, Arcadia 0

The second-seeded Blugolds (14-2-4) have allowed two goals over their past eight games and will play at Marshfield Columbus in a sectional semifinal on Thursday.

Senior David Onyeabor and senior Brent Markussen scored for Aquinas, which hasn’t lost since a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Marshfield Columbus on Sept, 7.

Senior Jackson Knothe took care of the shutout in goal. The Blugolds have shut out 11 opponents this season.
